Introducing source explorer and dataset updates to include ICMM v1.5
By Global Mining Dataset
We've updated our ICMM coverage to version 1.5 and introduced Asset History & Provenance, giving you a clearer way to explore the information behind a mining asset.
ICMM update: version 1.5
The ICMM Global Mining Dataset v1.5 includes 7,104 publicly available facility records from a broader inventory of 12,000. Some records cannot be shared publicly because of licensing restrictions. We include the public release alongside the other sources contributing to Global Mining Dataset, bringing revised names, locations and commodity information into a consistent asset view.
In its v1.5 publication, ICMM explains that the update aims to provide a more accurate picture of present-day large-scale mining and metals activity. The release improves facility information, brings duplicate entries together and removes records that fall outside that scope. The smaller record count reflects this refinement and should not be read as a corresponding fall in the number of operating mines worldwide.
The previous ICMM v1 release, with 8,508 source records, remains available as historical evidence in asset reports. You can inspect earlier records alongside their v1.5 updates where available. Removal from ICMM does not, by itself, mean that a mine has closed; assets supported by other sources can remain in normal results.
New feature: Asset History & Provenance

The new source timeline brings the available evidence for an asset into a single interactive view. Each dataset has its own branch, with connections showing how its records support the consolidated asset. You can see current contributions alongside historical versions where available, making it easier to understand why an asset may have different names or details across sources.
Hover over a point for a quick summary, or select it to inspect the underlying record. The other branches fade while you follow your selection. Selecting the consolidated asset brings you back to its current supporting sources. The view covers the public datasets associated with the asset, including ICMM, MRDS, MinCan, Australian mine records and mining polygons where available.
Source dates help you judge the age of the evidence, while the recorded history lets you review available changes over time.
For a team reviewing a shortlist, this makes it easier to move from a published asset to its supporting evidence, compare sources and identify questions for further research.
Asset History & Provenance is available with premium access in the full report for a public asset, under Additional Detail. Read the source timeline guide to get started, or see Data sources for the updated ICMM coverage.
